Kids love clowns and for good reason: they have a long history of making kids smile. Somewhere along the way to adulthood, though, clowns take on a more disturbing flavor. How does that happen? With her new show at the Metro Pictures Gallery, Cindy Sherman takes a stab.
Her photographs aren’t that in-your-face strange that freaks you out straight away. No, no — these photos have that subtle creepiness that sneaks up on you when you’re least expecting it and refuses to go away for some reason you can’t quite explain. Depending on who you are, that makes the exhibit something to rush off to or avoid like the plague. I vote the former.
